How to Choose the Right Nicotine Strength for Your E-Liquid

Picking the right nicotine level is crucial for a satisfying vape. Our guide helps you match your smoking habits to the ideal e-liquid strength.

How to Choose the Right Nicotine Strength for Your E-Liquid

Choosing the correct nicotine strength is one of the most important decisions when starting or adjusting your vaping journey. Too low and you won't feel satisfied; too high and the experience can be unpleasant.

Nicotine Strength Guide

20mg (2.0%) — Heavy Smokers

If you smoke 20+ cigarettes per day, start with 20mg nicotine salt e-liquid in a pod kit. This provides the closest approximation to the nicotine delivery of a cigarette and will help manage cravings effectively during your transition.

10-11mg (1.0-1.1%) — Moderate Smokers

Smokers of 10-20 cigarettes daily will find 10mg a comfortable middle ground. Available in both nic salt and freebase formulations, this strength satisfies without being overpowering.

6mg (0.6%) — Light/Social Smokers

If you smoke fewer than 10 cigarettes daily or are a social smoker, 6mg freebase nicotine is usually the right starting point. It delivers enough nicotine to satisfy occasional cravings.

3mg (0.3%) — Very Light / Stepping Down

Popular with sub-ohm vapers and those who've been gradually reducing their nicotine intake. At 3mg, you'll still get a subtle throat hit and just enough nicotine to take the edge off.

0mg — Nicotine Free

For vapers who've successfully weaned off nicotine but still enjoy the ritual, flavour, and sensation of vaping. Also popular in shortfill e-liquids used by hobbyist vapers.

Device Matters Too

Your nicotine strength should match your device type:

  • Pod kits (low power): Use 10-20mg nic salts or 50/50 freebase
  • Sub-ohm kits (high power): Use 3-6mg high VG freebase
  • Vape pens (medium power): Use 6-12mg 50/50 freebase

Using high nicotine (20mg) in a sub-ohm device will be extremely harsh and potentially cause nausea. Always match your strength to your device type.

Signs Your Nicotine Is Too High

  • Feeling dizzy or lightheaded after vaping
  • Nausea or headaches
  • Harsh, scratchy throat hit

Signs Your Nicotine Is Too Low

  • Constantly reaching for your vape
  • Still craving cigarettes
  • Chain-vaping without feeling satisfied
