Vape Coil Guide: When to Change & How to Prime New Coils
Learn the telltale signs your coil needs replacing, how to prime a new coil correctly, and tips to extend your coil life for better flavour and savings.
Your coil is the heart of your vaping experience. A fresh, properly primed coil delivers great flavour and satisfying clouds. A worn-out coil tastes burnt and can ruin even the best e-liquid. Here's everything you need to know.
What Does a Vape Coil Do?
The coil is a small metal wire wrapped in cotton (wicking material). When power from the battery heats the wire, it vaporises the e-liquid soaked into the cotton. Over time, the cotton degrades and residue builds up on the wire, reducing performance.
5 Signs It's Time to Change Your Coil
- Burnt taste: The most obvious sign. If your vape tastes charred or acrid, your coil is done.
- Reduced flavour: E-liquid tasting muted or different? The coil is losing its ability to vaporise properly.
- Less vapour: Noticeably thinner or less dense clouds indicate a worn coil.
- Gurgling sounds: Excess liquid pooling because the coil can't vaporise efficiently.
- Dark e-liquid: If the liquid in your tank or pod looks darker than when you filled it, residue from the old coil is discolouring it.
How to Prime a New Coil
Priming prevents the dreaded dry hit on your first puff. Follow these steps:
- Remove the new coil from its packaging
- Apply 3-5 drops of e-liquid directly onto the exposed cotton on the coil's ports
- Install the coil into your tank or pod
- Fill the tank with e-liquid
- Wait 5-10 minutes for the cotton to fully saturate
- Take a few gentle puffs without activating the battery (primer puffs)
- Start vaping at a low wattage and gradually increase
Tips to Make Coils Last Longer
- Avoid chain vaping: Give your coil a few seconds between puffs to re-wick
- Keep your tank topped up: Don't let the e-liquid drop below the coil's wicking ports
- Use the right VG ratio: High VG liquids (70%+) can struggle to wick in small coils
- Avoid very sweet e-liquids: Sweeteners like sucralose caramelise on the coil, shortening its life
- Don't exceed the coil's rated wattage: Check the recommended range printed on the coil
How Long Should a Coil Last?
On average, a vape coil lasts 1-2 weeks with regular use. Heavy vapers may need to change weekly, while light vapers might get 3+ weeks. Using sweeter e-liquids will shorten coil life significantly.
